June is #Pride month but we at Bio::Neos believe we have an ethical obligation to #pride all year-round. We believe in the importance of celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and creating a world where all are welcome to be who they are all year-round. Bio::Neos supports the LGBTQ+ Community through education, inclusion, and visibility.
It’s easy to change our logo to a rainbow to celebrate but Bio::Neos chooses to take it much further. In January our team completed Safe Zone Training facilitated through the University of Iowa. The training is made up of three, 2-hour long sessions, including an optional 3rd session of Trans Awareness. Our team completed all three. We were able to learn and discuss the history of #pride, and for some team members it was the first time learning about the Stonewall riots. Each member of our team gained more knowledge through each session, from learning basic LGBTQ terms and concepts to evaluating our resources at our office and now have a better understanding of gender identity and expression. Safe Zone Training helped us grow as a team and ensured everyone feels welcome.
When Bio::Neos was first founded in 2004, the founders simply followed the morals that naturally made them allies to the LGBTQ+ community. As allies, we focus on amplifying and listening to members of the LGBTQ+ community and strive to make others aware of issues the LGBTQ+ community faces daily. Allyship is a top priority for all team members and a foundational brick in the Bio::Neos structure.
Throughout the year we ensure that all communities are made visible along with the challenges they face. Visibility is hard, and transgender and non-binary persons have it exceptionally hard. One way we make an effort to increase visibility is by setting and using pronoun preferences. We do this on LinkedIn, Slack, and Google/Zoom meetings. This allows us to ensure that we address each other accordingly. We are committed to growing visibility by having conversations throughout the year about how we can support the LGBTQ+ community along with making efforts to solve problems community members face.
Bio::Neos is proud to continue to celebrate and support the LBGTQ+ community. We are committed to continuously supporting our coworkers. People within the LGBTQ+ community are our coworkers, friends, siblings, children, and family. Through our passive and active allyship, we strive to show support throughout the year. Happy #pride!
